Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni has implied that he never intended to join Liverpool.

The Reds were reportedly interested in signing the 22-year-old from Monaco this summer. However, Real Madrid ended up securing Tchouameni's signature.

The La Liga club paid £72 million for the 22-year-old's services. Going by Tchouameni's latest comments, Liverpool never stood a chance of signing him.

As quoted by The Daily Mail, he said the following: “I had the chance to choose other clubs, yes – but as soon as I knew Real Madrid wanted me, I never doubted.”

Tchouameni added: “Kylian (Mbappe) decided to stay at Paris Saint-Germain and already knew I was going to leave Monaco.

“Mbappe spoke to me, and asked me if I could come to Paris. But I told him I wanted to join Real Madrid, my choice was always Madrid. He understood my decision, he’s happy for me.

“I’m really happy to be here, to start a new chapter with the best club in the world… I want to make a mark in football and this club is the best to do it.

“I’m in the best club in the world. I spoke with the president and we agreed to win new titles. We are going to work on that, to win more titles for Real Madrid.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Tchouameni is a fine player. The midfielder averaged a WhoScored player rating of 7.15 across the 2021-22 campaign.

Also, Tchouameni is only 22 years of age. So, it would be fair to assume that he is far from the finished article.

Liverpool do possess an ageing midfield. Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson are all above 28 years of age.

Therefore, Tchouameni would have been a decent addition to Liverpool's midfield. But, it just wasn't meant to be.

We do hope that Liverpool bolster their midfield in the near future. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has nailed most of his signings during his time at Anfield.

So, if Liverpool sign a midfielder this summer, he will no doubt be a good player.
