Arsenal's Anfield hoodoo offers Liverpool hope this weekend

It's fair to say that Arsenal have not enjoyed their recent trips to Anfield. 

Last season, the Gunners took a two-goal lead against Liverpool only to stumble to a 2-2 draw, the Reds missing a penalty and Ibrahima Konate squandering the chance for a late winner from three yards out.

The campaign before that, Mikel Arteta's side were dismantled by the rampant Reds, Jurgen Klopp's men putting four unanswered goals past their visitors in the Premier League.

This year, Arsenal travel to Merseyside knowing they can make a statement. Beat Liverpool and they will move four points clear of them in the title race.

However, history suggests that securing all three points on Saturday will be an incredibly difficult proposition for the north London club.

In fact, Arsenal haven't won a game in 90 minutes at Anfield since a 2-0 victory back in September 2012. That defeat came in the opening few weeks of the season, goals from Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla securing the win.

Arsenal have beaten the Reds at Anfield more recently, but it came in the Carabao Cup on penalties after a goalless draw at full-time.

Since 2012, the Gunners have travelled to Anfield on 13 occasions. In said matches, the Reds have won seven across 90 minutes, scoring a total of 39 goals - an average of three per game.

It's obviously not just against Arsenal that Liverpool have an impressive home record - the Reds have lost just one of their last 50 home Premier League games - but it will undoubtedly offer Klopp and his players hope ahead of Saturday's huge clash.

There will almost certainly be plenty of goals this weekend too, with only one goalless league draw between the sides in their last 48 meetings.

Having said that, Liverpool have only conceded five in their last seven against the Gunners home and away, while Arsenal boast the joint best defensive record in the division this season.
