Liverpool were deemed fortunate by Arsenal fans online to have been given a penalty in last week’s Premier League victory against Bournemouth.

Cody Gakpo was tripped en route to the Cherries’ goal with rival fans accusing PGMOL of favouritism towards the Reds. Arne Slot was not having it in the aftermath, emphasising that in his eyes it was a penalty.

He also fired back at critics claiming Liverpool were benefitting more from refereeing calls than other sides this season.

“I can come up with three to five examples where we didn’t have the luck we deserved or we didn’t get the decision we deserved,” he said.

“That’s always a difficult thing as if there’s one in your favour, people will tell you there’s always that luck for Liverpool.”

Bergvall should have been sent off

And perhaps the best place to start analysing that claim is with the Carabao Cup semi-finals. Liverpool were beaten by Tottenham in the first leg by a single Lucas Bergvall goal to nil.

But, arguably, the Sweden midfielder shouldn’t have been on the pitch to score. Already on a booking, Bergvall clattered Kostas Tsimikas with a late challenge, but the matchday official opted against producing a second yellow card.

To add insult to injury, Tsimikas was off the pitch having received treatment when Bergvall scored. It was a double-referring disaster that the Reds will hope to overturn on Thursday.

But it doesn’t end there.

Palace's ridiculous foul count

We will take Slot’s number of “three to five” as a starting point and analyse some adverse calls against the Reds. But believe us, there are LOTS more.

Liverpool’s Premier League season has been LITTERED with refereeing errors, not that you’ll read much about it. Instead you will be persuaded that it’s the other way around.

Back in October for example as Liverpool faced a tricky lunchtime away trip at Crystal Palace, the foul count at one stage read 14-0 in Liverpool’s favour despite Slot’s side boasting over 70 percent of the possession.

That was ridiculous, demonstrating clearly that matchday officials were being influenced by the crowd.

Tosin drags down Jota

In their very next Premier League match, Liverpool managed to overcome Chelsea at Anfield but should have been playing against 10 men for the majority of the encounter.

Tosin Adarabioyo hauled down Diogo Jota inside 10 minutes but received only a yellow card which wasn’t upgraded to a red. That despite the fact that William Saliba was sent off for Arsenal the night before for a very similar foul versus Bournemouth.

In November the Reds headed to the south coast in order to face basement dwellers Southampton. It was a hard-fought game, ultimately edged by Liverpool, 3-2.

In that game former Red Adam Lallana inexplicably escaped a red card for a high, late, rash, studs-up challenge on Ryan Gravenberch. Even Roy Keane in the Sky Sports studio admitted that it should have been a sending-off for the midfielder.

Also in that game, Andy Robertson was penalised for a foul on Tyler Dibling, which led to a Saints’ penalty. However it was clearly demonstrated - despite VAR claiming otherwise - that the foul took place outside the area.

Fulham should have been down to nine

Then came the 2-2 draw in December versus Fulham at Anfield. Again, an opposition player SHOULD have seen a red card with Issa Diop mauling Robbo but no sending off was forthcoming.

In the same game, Andreas Pereira hit Gravenberch with a crunching late tackle which, again, drew no further attention.

“If I look back at the 100 minutes I saw I wasn’t surprised it wasn’t a red card. It’s up to you how you judge that,” was Slot’s analysis of the Diop one.

Instead Robertson was sent off for a last-man challenge while still feeling the effects of Diop's interventions.

How costly that could prove to be with Liverpool fighting to hold off Arsenal in the title race.

You can even add in the ridiculous call to not award Mohamed Salah a penalty in the game against Nottingham Forest last month when he was sandwiched between three players.
