Liverpool 'make enquiry' for Brazilian midfielder

Liverpool are among the clubs to have 'consulted' Atalanta about Brazilian star Ederson, according to a report. 

The 24-year-old joined the Bergamo side in 2022, having first moved to Europe with fellow Italian side Salernitana. Prior to that, he had spells with Cruzeiro and Corinthians among other clubs in his native Brazil and is now regarded as one of Serie A's best defensive midfielders.

According to Goal Brasil, Liverpool — along with Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle and Paris Saint-Germain — are interested in the player's situation and are 'willing to send a proposal'. However a deal in the next transfer window is much more likely.

Ederson is under contract until 2026, while Atalanta are going strong in Serie A, chasing Champions League qualification once again.

Goal's report claims that the Reds, along with other suitors, have made enquiries about 'Ederson's situation' and are preparing an official offer for this summer.

For his part, it is said that Ederson is open to a move, 'as long as the numbers please' his current club.

There is no speculation about how much it would take to prise the midfielder away from Atalanta.

La Dea have a track record of securing big fees for their top assets, previously selling Rasmus Hojlund to Manchester United for around £64m and Cristian Romero to Tottenham for £41m.

Despite a comprehensive midfield rebuild last summer that saw Liverpool spend £145m on four new arrivals, it has been speculated that the Reds could be tempted back into the market for further strengthening — particularly with regard to a holding player.

Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister have shared the role of the deepest-lying midfielder so far this season, while Thiago Alcantara's contract is due to expire this summer.

Anfield Watch understands that the Reds have also been monitoring another Serie A star in Morten Frendrup, who operates in a similar position for his club Genoa.

However, transfer plans are likely to be on hold until the club puts in place a plan to replace outgoing sporting director Jorg Schmadtke and, of course, Jurgen Klopp — two pivotal figures in the clubs recruitment activities.
