Liverpool have let a lot of young players leave the club but the one they will rue the most is Anthony Gordon.

The England international started out his career in the Reds' academy, but he was released and found his home at Everton instead.

Looking back at that decision years later, it seems like one of the biggest mishaps in the club's academy history. Gordon is now one of the best wingers in the Premier League.

He's regularly playing for the Three Lions as well and Newcastle United have high hopes for him to become one the leading stars of their metamorphosis into becoming a team that competes for titles on a regular basis.

Yet, even with those ambitions, Liverpool fans will still harbour hopes that Gordon's inevitable return to Anfield is possible.

Last summer things were really close. With Newcastle's mounting issues when it comes to the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), they were forced to sell key assets.

Gordon was one of those players they were willing to let go. But in the last minute they sold Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest instead.

Anthony Gordon's Liverpool HINT

Gordon signed a new long-term deal at Newcastle putting an end to all the speculations about his future. With that, it seemed like his Liverpool saga was over.

And yet, and yet...

The rumours have not ended there. Gordon continues to be linked with a move to Liverpool. Newcastle will still have PSR permutations to contend with this summer, especially if they do not qualify for the Champions League.

There's his close ties to Liverpool as well. His entire family are supporters of the Reds. Gordon himself grew up idolising one of Liverpool's very own.

This he revealed in the FA's recent YouTube video, which he shot with Curtis Jones. The two of them are both from Liverpool and are close friends, having come through the same generation and having even played with each other for the Reds at academy level.

In the interview, Jones was asked to guess who Gordon's footballing idol was from three options: Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard or Michael Owen.

"Ant played at Liverpool's academy when he was younger," Jones said.

"He's obviously a scouser as everybody knows his family are all Reds and knowing Ant I'm going to go for B, Steven Gerrard."

Jones' guess was correct.

"Correct," Gordon confirmed. "Stevie G. I think he's every scousers idol, isn't he?"

Those words pretty much demonstrate where Gordon's heart truly lies. He's a player destined to play for Liverpool and with comments like that he will give hope to Reds fans all over the world that a move is still possible.

It's not going to be an easy deal for Liverpool to pull off. But the Reds need more homegrown players. They want to sign a winger this summer as well, having failed to land Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Gordon just seems like the inevitable move. At 24-years-old, he's about to enter the prime of his career and he's the perfect replacement for Luis Diaz.

We are pretty much begging at this point for Richard Hughes to make this happen. And it's not impossible. Newcastle may need to sell one of their prized assets, that's why Alexander Isak is being talked about as a potential target for some of the top clubs in the Premier League, but surely they would prefer to sell Gordon instead.

The Reds could even offer up someone like Joe Gomez or Caoimhin Kelleher to Newcastle as a sweetener to get the transfer over the line, with Anfield Watch understanding both of them having been on the Magpies' radar in the past.

Even though it seems unlikely, there's still hope, and until there is hope, anything is possible.
