Liverpool Football Club has provided an injury update on midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

The Spaniard was named in Jurgen Klopp's starting XI for the League Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium yesterday.

However, Thiago sustained a knock during the warm-up, which meant that he did not feature at all against the Blues.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo, the club confirmed the following before kick-off: “Thiago Alcantara has been ruled out after sustaining a knock during the warm-up. Naby Keita replaces him."

The Times' Paul Joyce later confirmed that the knock Thiago suffered was a hamstring injury.

The 30-year-old was spotted in tears when the final got underway. But, as you can see below, Thiago was in a better mood after the match.

Liverpool defeated Chelsea 11-10 on penalties (0-0 after extra-time).

Anfield Watch Verdict

Thiago has suffered quite a few injuries since signing with Liverpool back in the summer of 2020.

In fact, the midfielder only recently returned from a hip problem. Therefore, hopefully Thiago has not suffered a serious hamstring injury.

The 30-year-old simply needs to have a bit more luck with his body going forward. Thiago is a world-class player, so he certainly aids the team when he is fit and available for selection.

Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick, who managed the midfielder at the Bundesliga club, has made some comments in the past which back up the aforementioned argument.

“When you see him on the pitch and in training, you see his extraordinary quality in possession of the ball,” said the 57-year-old, as quoted by Planet Football.

“But he has also now shown that he can defend. For me, there are no two opinions about Thiago’s quality.

“He is an exceptional player that gives a team that certain something. That’s my opinion and there is no other one.”

We wish Thiago a speedy recovery.
