Alisson names 'ultimate' Premier League moment – and it's not his goal
Alisson Becker has named his save from Miguel Almiron's volley earlier this season as his 'ultimate' Premier League moment – ahead of the stoppage-time goal he scored against West Brom.
The Liverpool goalkeeper has started the 2023/24 season in fine form and has been nominated for the Premier League's Save of the Month on all three occasions so far, winning the award back in August.
The Brazilian earned the gong for his wonder save in the 2-1 comeback win away at Newcastle, when he clawed a fiercely struck Almiron volley on to the bar.
The stop kept the Reds in the game at 1-0, with Darwin Nuñez later coming on as a second-half substitute to score twice and earn Liverpool a memorable victory.
Alisson named that moment as his finest in the Premier League's 'Ultimate' series, as he whittled down his best moments since joining the league in 2018.
“I’m a goalkeeper, I have to go with the save!” Alisson said, picking the Newcastle stop ahead of his goal. “I’m sorry… I think people will be disappointed with me for not putting the goal!”
Describing the save he said: “As a goalkeeper you have to go for every ball, you never just look at the ball going into the net, you have to always try.
“It’s what I did in this one, to be honest. It was a really difficult save and a nice save to look [at]. It always feels good and helped the team on that day with the three points.”
Reflecting on his famous headed winner against West Brom back in May 2021, Alisson admitted he didn't really think about anything in the moment as he rushed to meet Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner.
“Not many things,” said Alisson. “I was thinking, ‘Try to score’, be there to help. It’s a desperate moment that you just try to do everything. The header was lovely.”
The last-minute goal at the Hawthorns proved crucial as the Reds fought back from a patch of poor form to finish the season third and qualify for the Champions League.
With the strike, Alisson also became the first keeper to score in a competitive match in Liverpool's history, and just the sixth goalkeeper to find the net in the Premier League.
