Is 'unbelievable' Liverpool star the best in the Premier League right now?

Alexis Mac Allister once again delivered the goods for Liverpool as they beat Sheffield United 3-1. Is he the best in the Premier League?

Liverpool needed someone to step up and deliver after Sheffield United grabbed an equaliser at Anfield. Alexis Mac Allister was the one who produced it - just as he does every week.

That's now at least a goal or assist in eight of Mac Allister's last nine starts for Liverpool, as Squawka point out. They're not 'just' goals and assists, either.

There was winning and converting the penalty in the first leg against Sparta Prague. The equaliser against Manchester City. And equaliser against Manchester United. The assist for the winner against Brighton.

If Liverpool go on to win the title this season, Mac Allister will have played as big a role as anyone. We wrote during the international break that the Argentine was 'an outsider' for the Reds' Player of the Year award.

After two games back, he's suddenly one of the favourites. And that may not be all.

Alexis Mac Allister has it all

Taken as a whole, Mac Allister's season has been extraordinary - and even if you ignore the fact he was adjusting to a new team the entire time.

He started playing holding midfield - a role he's not particularly used to - while Liverpool took a chance on Wataru Endo in the summer. Now, the two games with the most tackles won by a Liverpool player in the last three years both belong to Mac Allister.

His nine tackles against Bournemouth are the most by a Liverpool player in the last nine years. Even four months ago, it was clear that the Reds just aren't as good when Mac Allister isn't there.

And that's just the defending.

Mac Allister has now scored or assisted in Liverpool's last six games in all competitions. No midfielder has done that at the club since Steven Gerrard in 2013.

No Liverpool fan is swapping him for another Premier League player right now. He's the best-performing player for the team at the top of the league and capable of delivering absolutely everything - there isn't another player like him.

“He’s just an unbelievable footballer,” said Conor Bradley about Mac Allister in midweek.

“I’ve never seen someone retain the ball so well. He’s so calm on the ball and he’s so composed. He’s just a wonderful footballer and he’s a joy to play with. I can’t praise him enough, to be honest.”

Everyone is realising just how good he is. By the end of the season - and there's still a good chunk of it to go - Mac Allister will have everyone won over.

Right now, he's the best in the Premier League.
