Alexis Mac Allister discusses first Liverpool assist

Alexis Mac Allister registered his first goal contribution for Liverpool in Sunday's 3-1 win over West Ham.

The Reds went 1-0 up at Anfield through a Mohamed Salah penalty but were pegged back by a Jarrod Bowen header shortly before half time.

Liverpool came out strongly in the second half, however. It was Mac Allister's wonderful lofted through ball that was turned in on the volley by Darwin Nuñez to put the hosts back in front and set them on the patch to victory, before Diogo Jota's strike wrapped things up five minutes from time.

Despite Liverpool's strong start to 2023/24, Mac Allister has endured a slightly turbulent start to life on Merseyside.

The World Cup winner was sent off in his home debut against Bournemouth (though the suspension was later rescinded), while he was taken off at half time against Wolves due to tiredness following the international break. The 24-year-old has also been asked to play the deeper-lying midfield role by Jurgen Klopp, thus far, which has somewhat limited his ability to show off his attacking talents.

However, the win on Sunday was perhaps Mac Allister's most impressive yet. He capped his display with a moment of magic, providing Nuñez's assist deep from midfield, when Liverpool needed a breakthrough.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the game, Mac Allister said of his first goal contribution in Liverpool colours: "It was a nice pass. I saw Mo and Darwin were going in behind, so I just had to play the ball and Darwin did the rest.

"I think he's [Nuñez] getting better and better. I think we will see the best of him this year. He's a very nice guy, he's working very hard. I'm really pleased for him."

The former Brighton star, who was one of four midfield summer arrivals, was also complimentary of Liverpool's other engine room options.

"I'm really happy. Dom [Szoboszlai] is a fantastic player," Mac Allister said. "As [Wataru] Endo and Ryan [Gravenberch] are as well - Curtis [Jones] too. We have a lot of good players and I really enjoy playing with them. As I say, I'm really enjoying playing with them and I'm really happy to be here."
