Former Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has praised the impact of signing Dominik Szoboszlai in the Reds' midfield.

The two players were on opposite sides of Liverpool's midfield rebuild this summer, with the Oxlade-Chamberlain released at the end of his contract, while Szoboszlai was brought in from RB Leipzig for £60m.

The 23-year-old Hungarian has been an instant hit at Anfield, impressing with his work-rate, creativity and shooting ability.

Szoboszlai's strong start has even caught the eye of Oxlade-Chamberlain, who sees echoes of himself in the number eight's style of play.

“I've really enjoyed watching Dominik Szoboszlai,” the 30-year-old Besiktas star told Sky Sports. “He's sort of taken over from my sort of role and I'm really impressed with how good of a player he is and that he plays the game, how I sort of always want to play the game.

“I think he's got so much ability, physicality and just his character as a player. I think he's just what we needed in there. He's been really, really good.”

Szoboszlai has two Liverpool goals to his name so far – a volley against Aston Villa and a long-range blockbuster against Leicester.

While Oxlade-Chamberlain was also known for his ability to hit the occasional rocket, the midfielder revealed that he has been told that Szoboszlai's ball-striking is even better.

“Trent tells me a lot how good he is as well. Trent says his shots are better than mine,” he added. “He's got everything. I know what the other guys that I've played with are capable of so it was more interesting to see the new lads come in, what they can do. I've enjoyed watching him.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain, who recently revealed he was somewhat left in the dark over his Liverpool exit, has enjoyed a strong start at his new club Besiktas, where he has three goals in 12 Super Lig outings.
