Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could remain at Anfield this summer, according to The Mirror.

The Englishman has been linked with a move away from Merseyside in recent times. However, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is likely to retain Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of next season.

As reported by The Mirror: '(Takumi) Minamino’s departure means it is unlikely that Klopp will allow Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to leave. The plan is for the club to look to strengthen their midfield next summer when Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner will all be out of contract.

'Oxlade-Chamberlain made just 17 appearances last season, but Klopp was impressed with his influence and attitude when Naby Keita departed to the AFCON and when there were Covid-19 cases inside the squad.

'And although there have been claims that Steven Gerrard wants to take the former England international to Aston Villa, it has been made clear to the midfielder that Klopp doesn’t want to lose him. The 28-year-old, a £35 million signing from Arsenal five years ago, has suffered a succession of injury problems during his time on Merseyside.

'But he has kept himself fit and available over the last 18 months and Liverpool would prefer to lose him on a free in 12 months’ time rather than sell him and be forced back into the market for a midfielder.'

Anfield Watch Verdict

We would love to see Oxlade-Chamberlain remain at Liverpool for the 2022-23 campaign. The reality is, the midfielder adds strength and depth to Klopp's squad.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has scored 17 goals and registered 15 assists in 132 appearances for Liverpool's first-team. The aforementioned figures highlight that he adds end product to the Reds' midfield.

Also, the Englishman is only 28 years of age, so his career is far from finished.

But, only time will tell where Oxlade-Chamberlain's short and long-term future lies. Who knows what the remainder of the summer transfer window has in store for us. There is always a surprise or two.

The 2022-23 Premier League campaign kicks off in early August.
