"A reminder of his quality" - Danny Murphy on Firmino's performance against Bournemouth

Pundit Danny Murphy was impressed with Roberto Firmino's performance against Bournemouth at Anfield last Saturday.

The forward scored two goals and registered three assists against the Cherries. Firmino also registered a WhoScored player rating of 9.17 against Bournemouth.

With that being the case, Murphy had plenty of good things to say about Firmino post-game.

As quoted by Anfield Watch, he told talkSPORT the following: "I think it gave everyone a reminder of his quality. Last season his confidence dropped a bit with the signings of (Diogo) Jota and (Luis) Diaz, he started to feel a little bit unloved and he wasn’t quite at it.

"But what he’s achieved in a Liverpool shirt will never be forgotten. I still think he can have a big impact, and the great thing about Firmino being fit and hungry is that it means you don't have to be as reliant on a young player in (Darwin) Nunez.

"He was a massive amount of money, (has) pressure on his shoulders, they can pick and choose his games if Firmino is at it. He’s been with Jurgen Klopp a long time. He’s made that false nine a position that other teams have.

"It’s been there before, Spain did it with (Cesc) Fabregas and other teams have done it, but not like he’s done it. He could have a huge say in what Liverpool achieve this season and he could be a huge bonus for Jurgen in that he won't have to rely as much on Nunez.

"I think he can pick and choose. He doesn’t get in behind and he doesn't get lots of chances, but he makes Liverpool tick.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Firmino was absolutely immense against Bournemouth. The 30-year-old was at his devastating best.

When Firmino is playing well, he is causing havoc in and around the penalty area. Bournemouth could not live with the Brazilian.

Firmino's contract expires at the conclusion of the 2022-23 campaign. So, it will be interesting to see where his long-term future lies.

Only time will tell. On another note, Liverpool will face Newcastle United at Anfield tomorrow night.

Hopefully Firmino can continue his good form against the Magpies. After four games, the Reds sit in ninth-place on the Premier League table.
