5 talking points from Liverpool's 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest

Liverpool continued their brilliant start to the season with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at Anfield.

In a game that was overshadowed with the news concerning the kidnapping of Luis Diaz’s parents, the Reds put in a superb performance to make the Colombian proud.

Diogo Jota opened the scoring in the 31^st minute with a brilliant counter attack, after Darwin Nunez’s effort was saved by Matt Turner, only to fall into the path of Liverpool’s number 20 to tap home.

Nunez then doubled Liverpool’s lead in the 35^th minute after Dominik Szoboszlai’s cut-back found the Uruguayan who had an easy finish, a few yards out.

Mo Salah secured all three points in the 77^th minute after a Szoboszlai long ball was misjudged by the outrushing Turner, leaving the Egyptian with the easiest of finishes into the empty net.

Liverpool’s win takes them into fourth in the Premier League, just three points behind leaders Tottenham.

Here are the five talking points from the game.

1) Salah x Szobo

All three of Liverpool’s goals today came from the right side of the pitch. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Szoboszlai and Salah linked up brilliantly today, but it was the latter two who stood out the most.

Liverpool’s first goal began with Salah’s beautiful through ball to Nunez, who forced a great save out of Turner, who could do nothing but watch as Jota tapped into an empty net.

The second goal, just four minutes later, was worked out perfectly by Klopp’s men. Salah picked the ball up just outside of the area, before playing in the overlapping Szoboszlai who squared a perfect pass to Nunez for another simple finish.

Liverpool’s final goal was a lot more fortunate, but once again involved both men. Szoboszlai’s long ball looked like a comfortable clearance for Turner, however his mishap left Salah with a comfortable finish into the empty Forest net.

Klopp will be elated with his right side, and when all three are fit and firing, Liverpool will be very hard to stop.

2) Prayers for Lucho

Late on Saturday night, news broke that the parents of Luis Diaz had been kidnapped in Colombia. His mother was rescued on Saturday morning; however Diaz’s father still remains missing.

Before the game, Klopp spoke very openly on the situation. “We had to obviously make a late change because of the private situation involving Luis Diaz. It's a worrying situation for all of us and it was a pretty tough night. I have never had that before.”

Diaz would certainly have been proud of his side’s performance against Nottingham Forest, and the love his team mates have for him was evident after Jota produced the number seven shirt after his opener.

All of the football community's prayers will be with Diaz and his family over the coming days.

3) Szoboszlai’s first assist… plus another

This will come as a shock to many, but today was the day that Szoboszlai found his first Premier League assist for Liverpool since his summer move.

The Hungarian has been a breath of fresh air in the Liverpool midfield, and hasn’t put a foot wrong so far, but the one thing lacking were the assists.

Today brought not one, but two for the 23-year-old, who ran the centre of the pitch yet again, playing his part in goals for Nunez and Salah.

He’s got the goals, he’s got the assists, he’s got it all. What a player Szoboszlai can become for Liverpool.

4) Comfortable Tsimikas

Much has been said since Andy Robertson’s shoulder injury earlier this month while on international duty with Scotland. Kostas Tsimikas is Klopp’s safe option to replace the Scotsman at left-back, however questions will still be asked as to whether the ‘Greek Scouser’ can perform there.

Albeit a quiet game for Tsimikas, the 27-year-old didn’t look out of place one bit. Hardly putting a foot wrong, the Greek international slotted into Liverpool’s backline perfectly.

Robertson will still remain Klopp’s first choice when he returns, but for now Tsimikas certainly looks up to the task of filling in Liverpool’s void.

5) Thin on the bench

With a number of players out missing. Liverpool’s bench was heavily affected, looking slightly weaker for the first time this season.

Along with Diaz, ongoing injuries for Thiago, Ben Doak, Stefan Bajcetic and Robertson - as well as the suspension of Curtis Jones - meant that Klopp had to field two goalkeepers and two academy graduates in order to fill the bench.

In a game that Liverpool had comfortably wrapped up by half time, Klopp didn’t have to rely on his bench too much. However, against the bigger teams, the Reds will be hoping for more options.
