5 talking points from Liverpool's 2-0 win over Burnley

Here are five talking points from Liverpool beating Burnley 2-0 in the Premier League on Boxing Day. It was comfortable in the end - just.

Klopp's trust

Right from the off, Jurgen Klopp threw his trust in Liverpool players against Burnley. Both Darwin Nunez and Wataru Endo went into this fixture just one yellow from a suspension. Get booked and they'd miss the visit of Newcastle United on New Year's Day.

And the chances of yellows looked good. Endo plays holding midfield, after all, and is asked to make difficult challenges. Nunez is Darwin Nunez.

But both came out of it unscathed and can play the Magpies. Even better, the five-yellow limit has now been raised to 10 so this is no longer a concern.

Klopp was absolutely right to put his trust there, then. A massive win for the boss.

Shoot, shoot, shoot

Liverpool have had an awful lot of shots in recent games. They haven't found the net anywhere near as much as they'd have liked, however.

In total, they had 19 at Burnley and the standout thing about that is how every single starting outfield player had at least one shot. Every starting forward and midfielder hit the target at least once, too.

In fact, Curtis Jones - a second-half substitute - was the only outfield Liverpool player who didn't have a shot in this one. The Reds eventually did enough to secure a solid win but they'll still be a little concerned that they couldn't find the net more consistently.

Nunez finally finds one

Darwin Nunez finally got his goal. The Uruguayan hadn't scored since early November - a run of 12 games without a goal for Liverpool.

It only took him six minutes against Burnley, however, as the striker fired home brilliantly from the edge of the box. It was exactly the kind of goal you imagined he'd end the drought with - one of such quality that you're left wondering how he went so long without scoring.

But that's just the Darwin experience, more questions than answers. The important thing is that he's back doing match-winning things for Liverpool.

Nunez put in a solid performance overall, too. Only Trent Alexander-Arnold (4) made more key passes than his three, while Nunez also made sure to be involved as often as anyone.

Hopefully, this goal is something to build on and he can start the opposite kind of streak.

Jota picks it right back up

Liverpool struggled to find a way through after Nunez's 6th-minute opener but it didn't take Jota long to get back amongst the goals. In fact, he only played six minutes here.

But as soon as he had a sight of goal, Jota found the net. It is exactly what Liverpool needed to see after struggling to score in recent Premier League games - and exactly what they need as Mohamed Salah prepares to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Jota is back and looking clinical already. If only he'd been around against Manchester United and Arsenal.

A bit of a break

Liverpool have played five games in 13 days. Now they have almost a week off before facing Newcastle United on New Year's Day. The squad will have been counting down the day until this.

Things have looked a little rusty at times across some massive games and it's easy to imagine that this break will do everyone a world of good. They've got six days to rest up and find their feet before heading into 2024 firmly in a title race.
