3 positions Liverpool could strengthen in January transfer window

The January transfer window is here and Liverpool do have areas that need strengthening. Here are three positions in which they could buy.

Sometimes Liverpool make big moves in the January transfer window. Other times they do remarkably little. There's usually a lot of talk either way.

The Reds brought in Virgil van Dijk back in 2018, selling Philippe Coutinho. We've seen Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo both arrive in the winter window, too, while 2020 saw frustration as Liverpool failed to strengthen sufficiently at centre-back despite an injury crisis.

This time around, the feelings aren't quite as strong. There aren't any particularly strong links to players, while the squad doesn't have any glaring holes, either.

But there are certainly areas where Liverpool could make moves. We've picked out the three most likely.

Centre-back

Liverpool will sign a centre-back eventually. If no one arrives this month, everyone should expect some sort of movement in the summer. That's just the nature of Virgil van Dijk being well into his 30s now and Joel Matip being out of contract this year (as well as injured).

A new player would almost certainly arrive in January if not for Jarell Quansah. He's surprised everyone with his performances and they might just have been good enough to play a part for the rest of the season.

But if the 'right' player becomes very available now, rather than the summer, Liverpool could move. The Reds are reportedly scouting Goncalo Inacio, for one, and demand in him could force activity soon.

Holding midfield

Liverpool almost certainly planned to sign a new holding midfielder in January after missing out on their primary targets last summer. Wataru Endo arrived as a stop-gap but the sense was that the winter would bring an opportunity to sign a 'better' player.

Only, Endo has since proven to be a fantastic signing, establishing himself as a key part of the first XI. It remains to be seen whether his efforts have been good enough to abandon any plans for a replacement to arrive.

Right-wing

Liverpool are without an out-and-out right-sided forward right now. Mohamed Salah is away with Egypt for AFCON and that leaves things a little bare at Anfield.

No other forward is a natural on that side, with literally all of them preferring the left. Harvey Elliott can play the role but in a very different way - he's more of a midfielder than a winger.

And so the right player could tempt Liverpool as it is a role that they'll need to fill at some point. Salah isn't getting any younger, after all, and talk of Michael Olise perhaps shouldn't be a surprise.
