14 Liverpool players on international duty during September break

Liverpool signed off the first mini-section of the 2023/24 Premier League season with a 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

The latest victory makes it three from four so far, with Jurgen Klopp's Reds unbeaten and only behind Manchester City on points as things pause for the international break.

Despite a tricky set of fixtures, it couldn't have gone much better for Liverpool so far.

It's a bit of a shame, then, that the Premier League now skips a weekend as international duty takes over with Euro 2024 and World Cup 2026 (yes already) qualifying, as well as various friendlies, happening around the globe.

15 Liverpool first-team players have been selected for the countries this September.

Here's a rundown of who, where, when and why. Just all come back in one piece, please lads!

Goalkeepers

Alisson Becker (Brazil) – Liverpool's number one will likely be in action as Brazil take on Bolivia (Belem, 9 September) and Peru (Lima, 13 September) as the Seleção start the long road to Canada/USA/Mexico 2026.

Caoimhin Kelleher (Republic of Ireland) – The Reds' backup plays a similar role for his country, with Southampton's Gavin Bazunu now the preferred choice for Stephen Kenny's side. Ireland take on France (Paris, 7 September) and Netherlands (Dublin, 10 September) in Euro 2024 qualifying Group B – the latter fixture is sure to feature some familiar faces.

Defenders

Virgil van Dijk (Netherlands) – Though suspended for Liverpool, Van Dijk faces no such issue for his country. Before the meet-up with Kelleher in Dublin, Netherlands face Greece (Eindhoven, 7 September).

Andy Robertson (Scotland) – The Scotland captain faces a trip Cyprus (Larnaca, 8 September) as they aim to keep up an impressive group-topping Euro qualifying campaign, before a friendly with England (Glasgow, 12 September).

Kostas Tsimikas (Greece) – The Reds' backup left-back faces Van Dijk and co in the Netherlands before taking on the slightly more manageable task of Gibraltar (Athens, 10 September) as Greece aim to keep hold of second place in a competitive Euro 2024 qualifying Group B.

Midfielders

Alexis Mac Allister (Argentina) – The World Cup holders start the defence of their title with a home tie against Ecuador (Buenos Aires, 8 September) and then travel to famously difficult away day Bolivia (La Paz, 12 September).

Wataru Endo (Japan) – The Japan captain faces two friendly encounters in Europe during this international break – first taking on Germany (Wolfsburg, 9 September) and then Turkey (Genk, 12 September).

Harvey Elliott (England Under-21s) – There's just one game for the Young Lions this September. The Under-21 Euro title winners start the next qualification cycle with a trip to Luxembourg (Differdange, 11 September).

Dominik Szoboszlai (Hungary) – The Hungary captain faces a trip to Serbia (Belgrade, 7 September) in Group G of Euro qualifying, before taking on Czechia (Budapest, 10 September) in a friendly.

Forwards

Luis Diaz (Colombia) – Diaz's Colombia take on Venezuela (Barranquilla, 8 September) before continuing their World Cup 2026 qualifying with a trip to Chile (Macul, 13 September).

Diogo Jota (Portugal) – Jota's Portugal have a perfect record in Euro 2024 qualifying so far. Two more wins against Slovakia (Bratislava, 9 September) and Luxembourg (Almancil, 11 September) will put the see them all but qualify for Germany next summer.

Mohamed Salah (Egypt) – Egypt face Ethiopia in their final AFCON group qualifier (Cairo, 8 September). Salah could also be used in the Pharaoh's upcoming friendly with Tunisia, (TBD, 12 September).

Cody Gakpo (Netherlands) – Like Van Dijk, Gakpo will be part of the Netherlands squad that faces Ireland and Greece.

Darwin Nuñez (Uruguay) – Liverpool's in-form striker is set to play to join up with Uruguay and Marcelo Bielsa (who has been giving him shooting tips) for World Cup qualifiers against Chile (Montevideo, 9 September) and Ecuador (Quito, 12 September).

Who's not going?

Of the notable players remaining on Merseyside, Curtis Jones is not meeting up with Liverpool teammate Elliott for the England Under-21s as he's now officially too old for the age category. Instead, he'll be waiting by the phone for future call-ups to Southgate's senior squad.

Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold was withdrawn from the Three Lions camp after picking up a hamstring injury in the win over Aston Villa.

Ibrahima Konate was also initially selected by France manager Didier Deschamps but has been replaced due to his own hamstring problem, while new signing Ryan Gravenberch decided to withdraw himself from Netherlands contention to focus on his new club.
