The Reds established their European dominance during the 1970s and early 1980s, with the legendary Anfield bootroom producing a remarkable coaching culture which endured for decades to come.
Under managers like Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, and Joe Fagan Liverpool won a hoard of silverware in those golden decades.
In subsequent years, success has been harder to find but the priority for the Reds has always been to win trophies.
More recently Jürgen Klopp has been able to help Liverpool return to its former glories, lifting the sport’s most coveted trophies in the Premier League and the Champions League.
European Cup and UEFA Champions League
Liverpool have won the European Cup/UEFA Champions League six times. Their victories came in the years 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, 2005, and 2019. Notable moments include the stunning comeback in the 2005 final against AC Milan, where they rallied from 3-0 down to win on penalties, and their 2019 victory against Tottenham Hotspur, securing their sixth title in Madrid.
Champions of England - Division 1 and Premier League
The Reds have claimed the top-flight title 19 times. Their league triumphs include the years 1901, 1906, 1922, 1926, 1934, 1964, 1966, 1973, 1976, 1979, 1982, 1986, 1988, 1990, and their most recent victory in 2019-2020. The iconic 1987-1988 season, where they lost only two matches, remains etched in history as one of their finest campaigns.
FA Cup
Liverpool have lifted the FA Cup trophy 8 times, with victories in 1965, 1974, 1986, 1989, 1992, 2001, 2006, and 2022. Their memorable 2006 final against West Ham United is famously known for its dramatic penalty shootout, while the 2001 victory over Arsenal marked a historic treble-winning season.
League Cup
The Reds have won the League Cup (also known as the EFL Cup or Milk Cup) 10 times, with triumphs in 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1995, 2001, 2003, 2012, 2022 and 2024. The recent 2024 final will remain long in the memory with Klopp’s young kids helping the Reds to defeat Chelsea.
UEFA Cup and Europa League
Liverpool have won the UEFA Cup (now known as the Europa League) 3 times, in 1973, 1976, and 2001. The 2001 final against Alavés was an unforgettable match that ended 5-4 after extra time, and ultimately culminated in a late Liverpool victory.
Champions of the World - FIFA World Club Cup
Liverpool claimed the FIFA Club World Cup title in 2019, defeating Flamengo 1-0 in the final, with Roberto Firmino scoring the decisive goal in extra time.
Charity/Community Shield
The Reds have lifted the Charity Shield 16 times, with victories in years such as 1964, 1986, 2001, 2006, and 2022. This competition, often seen as a curtain-raiser to the season, has provided Liverpool with numerous opportunities to win more silverware.
UEFA Super Cup
Liverpool have won the UEFA Super Cup four times starting in 1977, 2001, 2005 and 2019. One of the most memorable victories for the Reds came against Chelsea in a nail biting penalty shoot-out where Adrian made himself the hero in 2019.
