Liverpool FC news recap: Forest controversy, Amorim scouted, Musiala linked

Here's our Liverpool FC news recap for Sunday, 3rd March 2024. The Reds have been surrounded by controversy following yesterday's late win at Nottingham Forest.

Much has been made of the officiating in the build-up to Darwin Nunez's 99th minute winner, with pundits and ex-referees alike expressing their outrage at Paul Tierney's antics. Not the first time he's been the centre of discussion.

However, beyond the classic debate around refereeing, we've also had a couple decent rumours to sink our teeth into, plus a ringing endorsement from a certain Reds legend.

Here's our Liverpool FC news recap.

Mark Clattenberg vows to go to PGMOL

Nottingham Forest 'referee analyst' Mark Clattenberg has expressed the club's outrage after supposedly shoddy officiating led to Darwin Nunez's late winner in yesterday's contest with Liverpool.

During the crucial final moments in the game, Forest were in a dangerous position when Paul Tierney paused play for a head injury to Ibrahima Konate.

Upon Konate's recovery, Tierney decided that Reds keeper Caoimhin Kelleher should restart the game with an uncontested drop ball - despite the fact it was the home side that were in possession of the ball when the whistle was blown.

From that, Liverpool went up the other end to score a dramatic 99th minute winner, with Darwin Nunez heading home to send the City Ground away end into bedlam.

Dumfounded by the decision of his former refereeing colleague, Clattenberg has vowed to take the issue to PGMOL, feeling his new employers were robbed of a potentially vital point in their fight for survival.

Liverpool send scouts to watch Ruben Amorim

Liverpool have reportedly sent representatives to watch Sporting C.P. manager Ruben Amorim as they narrow down their list of candidates to replace Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp's deified nine-year stint at Anfield will come to an end in the summer, after the German revealed back in January that he was 'running out of energy'.

Names regularly touted to replace the Premier League and Champions League winner have been Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso and Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi.

However, another man that's said to be considered for the post in 39-year-old Sporting manager Ruben Amorim.

Liverpool alerted after Jamal Musiala contract stall

Liverpool are on red alert after reported target Jamal Musiala turned down a contract offer from Bayern Munich - potentially in favour of a move to the Premier League.

The Reds are joined by fellow title rivals Manchester City in the race for the German midfielder, who has earned wide acclaim as a possible future Ballon d'Or winner.

According to the Daily Star, both clubs had representatives in attendance to watch Musiala during Bayern's 3-0 defeat to Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen in February - a major blow to the Bavarian outfit's push for a 12th successive Bundesliga title.

Speculation has ramped up after it came out that Musiala had been offered a £150,000 per week contract to stay at Bayern, only to reject the proposal.

Luis Suarez heaps praise on Darwin Nunez

It's been a cracking weekend for the top strikers of Uruguayan football.

Darwin Nunez grabbed the headlines on Saturday afternoon as he headed in a 99th minute winner for Liverpool against Nottingham Forest, stealing three points that could prove crucial in the title race.

However, he wasn't the only Uruguayan talisman to net notable goals this weekend.

Reds legend Luis Suarez bagged his first goals since joining up with Lionel Messi at MLS side Inter Miami, scoring a brace inside the first 11 minutes in a 5-0 win over Orlando City.

And speaking after his game in Miami, El Pistolero revealed his joy at seeing his former employers pick up a late but vital victory, before giving a ringing endorsement of Nunez.

Jurgen Klopp becomes longest-serving manager in England

Jurgen Klopp will still be reeling after his side left it late to snatch all three points away at Nottingham Forest - but the win isn't all he's taking out of the weekend.

The German manager has been in the dugout at Anfield since October 2015 - a nine-season tenure that will come to the end this summer as he leaves the club after a glory-laden run.

But just as he's about to depart, Klopp has become the longest-serving active manager in England's top four divisions.

This comes after Accrington Stanley, formerly of milk fame, announced the dismissal of tenured boss John Coleman, who had been in charge of the club since 2014.
