Liverpool are still hunting for Jurgen Klopp's successor at the end of the season and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has suggested a new name that could take over from the 56-year-old at Anfield.

It's widely reported that Xabi Alonso is Liverpool's priority choice to replace Klopp this summer, with the former Reds midfielder having done a sensational job at Bayer Leverkusen this season.

The Spaniard has guided Die Werkself to the top of the Bundesliga table - eight points clear of Bayern Munich - and they remain unbeaten in all competitions.

However, there is no guarantee that Alonso will return to Merseyside at the end of the campaign, with Brighton & Hove Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi and Germany national team manager Julian Nagelsmann among the other candidates for the Anfield hot seat.

Carragher on Roger Schmidt

But Ex-Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher has chucked another potential left-field appointment into the mix, suggesting that Benfica boss Roger Schmidt is a name that he's heard mentioned regarding the Liverpool job.

Speaking to RedmenTV Plus, Carragher stated: "There’s the guy at Benfica that I’ve heard mentioned, Roger Schmidt. Who I think has got that link to the sort of Red Bull school…

"I think when people are mentioning him, it’s almost sort of the style is similar to Klopp’s style, so you think, ‘okay, would that be a good fit and would you have to change that much?'"

Schmidt impressed with Benfica in last season's Champions League, reaching the quarter-finals after topping a group that contained Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.

The 56-year-old also won the Primeira Liga last campaign and is fighting with Sporting CP for this season's title, the Lisbon side led by another potential Liverpool managerial target in Ruben Amorim.

Schmidt is known for employing a relentless, high-pressing system that somewhat resembles Klopp's at Liverpool, and he has earned plenty of plaudits for Benfica's impressive recent performances.

Whether Schmidt is a name being realistically considered by Liverpool remains to be seen, with the club perhaps looking for someone stylistically different to Klopp to bring a fresh dynamic to the club.

Regardless of whether Schmidt is a genuine candidate for the role, Alonso clearly remains the club's priority target.
