Liverpool 'cult hero' Martin Škrtel has found a new club following his retirement and will take over as sporting director at Slovakian club DAC Dunajska Streda.

The 39-year-old former captain of the Slovakian national team has taken to the position that has been vacant for a month, following the departure of Gleb Platov. The club's executive director Jan van Daele made the announcement at a press conference this morning.

Škrtel also spoke at the press conference and said: “I want to thank the owner of the club and the executive director for their trust and chance.

“A new stage is beginning for me and I believe that I will be able to transform the experience I have gained as a player into a new job and a new position.

“I am glad that this chance has come and I can take this new path as an official at this club. I will do my best not to disappoint and to fulfil my role and the club's goals.”

Škrtel’s time at Liverpool

Liverpool fans seeing Škrtel for the first time since he left Liverpool in 2016 may be surprised that he is now sporting a healthy head of hair, which despite moving to Turkey, is completely natural.

He was a no-nonsense centre back for the Reds who was known for his signature shaved head and aggressive playing style. Although not one of the greatest Liverpool have had, he is still remembered fondly by many fans following his eight years.

Liverpool fans remembered him recently, during the social media trend of 'Barclaysmen', players we should not forget from previous eras, and agreed that he had earned cult hero status. He also has returned to Anfield to feature in Liverpool legends games, alongside former stars Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

The high-point of his time with the club was the 2012 League Cup win, with the Slovakian winning Liverpool’s player of the year award that same season.
