Man City's owners TARGET Liverpool midfielder ahead of summer transfer window

Manchester City's sister club Girona is looking to bolster its squad ahead of next season and are preparing to target a Liverpool star this summer.

Girona, who are owned by City Football Group (CFG), have had an amazing campaign and qualified for the Champions League following their second 4-2 victory of the season over Barcelona in early May.

However, due to their connections with Man City, they may not even be able to participate in Europe's premier competition next season.

The club and CFG have also come under fire recently for alleged financial irregularities regarding the signing of star striker Artem Dovbyk, potentially adding to the 115 charges levelled against Man City.

Regardless, the Spanish side are eager to strengthen their squad after overachieving this season under the impressive Michel, and they could pursue a move for departing Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

Liverpool announced earlier on Friday that Thiago would be leaving the club this summer, something many supporters had already come to terms with.

The 33-year-old has played just ten minutes this season having been sidelined with injury for almost the entirety of the campaign and he will follow Jurgen Klopp, a host of staff members and Joel Matip out the door this summer.

According to a recent report from Sport (via Sport Witness), Thiago is subject of interest from Girona, with contact having even been made between the midfielder and the club.

Thiago would reportedly prefer a return to Catalonia - where he previously played under Pep Guardiola at Barcelona - making Girona an attractive option.

It would also mean that he could potentially face Liverpool in next season's Champions League - providing, of course, Girona are allowed to participate and Thiago remains fit.

According to Spanish journalist Luis Martin and Carrusel Deportivo’s El Bar (via El Desmarque), who corroborate Sport's claims of Girona interest, Real Betis is another option for Thiago.

However, they also state that two English clubs are keen on the veteran, although Thiago himself prefers a return to Spain.
