Young Liverpool defender Luke Chambers has suffered an injury out on loan with Wigan Athletic that will rule him out for much of the rest of the season.
The 19-year-old left back, who spent part of last season on loan at Kilmarnock, linked up with League One side Wigan in January, having made four first-team appearances for Liverpool in the first half of 2023/24.
Chambers had been impressing out on loan, starting 15 times for Wigan and featuring at centre-back as well as out wide. He has also registered two assists.
However, after missing the weekend's 0-0 draw with Port Vale, manager Shaun Maloney has now confirmed the youngster has suffered a muscle injury that will all but rule him out for the remainder of the campaign.
“Luke’s had a very hectic few weeks, and we’ve been trying to manage him as best we can,” Maloney told the Wigan Observer.
“Unfortunately, I don’t think he’ll be back until the very last game of the season.”
With Wigan sitting in mid-table and no chance of the playoffs, their season is set to conclude on April 27, with a clash against Bristol Rovers.
Impressive performances
Speaking recently Maloney hailed Chambers' impact during his temporary switch.
“I’ve been really impressed with Luke, he’s had a brilliant loan,” Maloney said. “I’ve loved his personality, he’s literally thrown himself into any position I’ve asked him to do. He’s been flat out, 100 percent.
“To make it really simple, we signed him in January and he’s made our starting XI better. For a youngster to do that, it’s full credit to him.”
Preston-born Chambers has long-been highly rated at Liverpool and made his senior debut for the Reds in the 3-1 Carabao Cup win over Leicester in September last year.
He went on to make three appearances in the Europa League group stages and was even linked with a move to Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen last summer.
