New Luis Diaz song had Liverpool star CALLING the songwriter

By the time Luis Diaz’s second goal went in at Anfield last weekend, fans were realising that something really is different this season.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold’s commanding run and Diaz’s timed run in behind to make it 2-0, the Colombian winger reached five goals in five games; he scored eight in the league in the entirety of last season.

And so, as is appropriate, his song rang out through the terraces. To the tune of Bella Ciao - a folk song dedicated to the anti-fascist members of the Italian resistance movement during the Second World War - was the ode heard:

‘His name is Lucho,

He came from Porto,

He came to score,

Came to score,

Came to score, score, score,

He’s Luis Diaz,

He’s from Barrancas,

Now he plays for Liverpool!’

It is no less than the winger deserves given the immense level of his play so far this year. The chant itself was first performed by Andy Hodgson at Taggy’s Bar, an institution near Anfield, in May last year.

The existence of the song meant to much to Diaz that he actually reached out to Hodgson at the end of last season to thank him personally for his work.

“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing when I answered the video call. I nearly dropped the phone,” Hodgson told The Athletic, “There was Lucho looking at me saying: ‘I just want to say thank you so much for the song, much love’.

It joins the long list of inspired chants that can be currently heard on any visit to Anfield.

Allez Allez Allez has been a mainstay for a while now, as has ‘he’s Virgil van Dijk’ to the tune of Dirty Old Town, ‘Mo Salah running down the wing’, ‘The scouser in our team’ for Trent Alexander-Arnold, and the newest addition, ‘Arne Slot!’ to the tune of Opus’s

Life is Life.

Diaz’s song was played after the full-time whistle after the victory over Bournemouth. If he can keep this goalscoring form up, we might just need an entire album.
