Liverpool’s impressive start to the season has been spearheaded by the supreme form of Luis Diaz.

The Colombian has already registered 5 goals and 1 assist in the Reds’ opening five Premier League outings.

Diaz is now seen as undroppable, which speaks volumes of his season so far, with Cody Gakpo also impressing every time he lays foot on a football pitch.

Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Anthony Gordon in late June with the Reds having a medical in place to finalise a move for the winger.

Gordon was set to join Liverpool in a deal worth £75 million with Joe Gomez prepared to go the other way for a fee of £45 million.

After finding alternative solutions to their PSR issues, Newcastle retained the winger, much to the disappointment of Gordon, who was eager to join his boyhood club.

Luis Diaz has seen off Anthony Gordon threat

The interest in Gordon and Federico Chiesa's arrival demonstrated Liverpool's summer intentions to bolster their formidable attacking lineup.

Gordon’s Anfield arrival would have given Arne Slot a major headache with the Dutchman already planning to seek the best form out of Diaz.

The Athletic reported that one of the reasons a move for Gordon didn’t reach completion was Liverpool’s beliefs that Slot could get the best out of Diaz.

Diaz himself was linked with a move away from the club this summer - with Barcelona looking the likely destination - but the Reds were adamant on keeping the Colombian on Merseyside.

So far this season, Liverpool’s sights have come to fruition with Diaz being one of the Reds’ standout performers, while Gordon is yet to get going for Eddie Howe’s side.

If the form of Diaz and Gakpo isn’t enough to eliminate the need for Gordon in the near future, a new long-term contract that the 23-year-old is set to accept at Newcastle could see an end to his chances of an Anfield move.

It is yet to be signed, but it is believed the winger will get a five-year deal in the North East as a reward for his impressive 2023/24 campaign, Fabrizio Romano claims.
