Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has offered his opinion on the Reds' 2024/25 Premier League title chances.

Liverpool are just several days away from the beginning of the new Premier League season, kicking their campaign off against newly-promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday lunchtime.

A promising pre-season in which the Reds beat Real Betis, Arsenal, Manchester United and Sevilla has lifted expectations ahead of the new season and a favourable early fixture list means Liverpool could make a lightning fast start under their new Dutch coach.

However, given how long Jurgen Klopp spent in charge of the Reds, there are still likely to be teething problems for the former Feyenoord coach.

As a result, Carragher is not expecting too much from Liverpool in the 2024/25 season.

Jamie Carragher's title verdict

Speaking with FourFourTwo, the ex-Liverpool defender revealed that he still believes Manchester City and Arsenal are the only sides that can win the title ahead of the upcoming campaign.

"I can only see Arsenal or City really," said Carragher. "I know people are talking about Arsenal because they’ve gone close twice and they’re really close to making that next step.

"But I still look at Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva, and I think that is still better than what Arsenal have got."

The former England international believes that it's too soon for Slot's side to challenge for the title, especially given he thinks Liverpool overperformed last term.

"I was really surprised Liverpool came so close last season, if I’m being honest," he added.

"With the new manager coming in, finding his feet in the Premier League, most Liverpool fans would expect top four this season. I don’t think anyone will be expecting a title.

"If you could have a title challenge like last season, and maybe a new manager comes in and adds something to what Jurgen Klopp had, but having a new manager in the Premier League is not easy and I think Liverpool slightly overperformed last season in terms of being in the title race for so long.

"Another season like Liverpool had last season would be a great start for Arne Slot."
