Incoming Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili was named MVP this week after a spectacular save for Valencia in La Liga.

Liverpool signed Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia this summer but immediately sent the Georgian back to the club on loan. He’ll spend the entirety of the 2024/25 campaign there - and it’s a good thing for Valencia, too.

Mamardashvili has been their star across the opening games, with the peak of his displays coming against Girona on Saturday. Valencia won the fixture 2-0 at home, pulling themselves off the foot of La Liga thanks to an own goal and a strike from Dani Gomez.

But it was Mamardashvili who stole the show. The goalkeeper picked up the MVP award after a string of wonderful saves that kept his team in the hunt.

Of course, Mamardashvili played down his significance upon receiving the award, making it clear that he merely did his job like the rest of his team.

"It's my job to make stops,” he told DAZN, per Super Deporte. "I'm not the MVP, but the rest of the players with me.

"This year I will give the maximum I can for Valencia CF."

But when you see just how good the saves from Mamardashvili were, it’s easy to see why he was named MVP in the win.

La Liga’s Twitter account put up the pick of the bunch afterwards, applauding the goalkeeper for his efforts.

Mamardasvili heading to Liverpool

Liverpool are getting one of the best goalkeepers in the world next summer. Of course, they already have arguably the best goalkeeper in the world at the club in Alisson Becker.

It remains to be seen what will happen there as Liverpool try to balance having both. It could well be that Alisson departs, though there are few suggestions that things are heading in that direction.

Then there’s the Caoimhin Kelleher question - one he’s brought up himself, in fact. All in all, the Reds will have a plethora of elite goalkeepers but with only one spot as the actual first-choice, there are some incredibly difficult decisions on the way.
