Dominik Szoboszlai makes big statement on Liverpool's position in title race

Dominik Szoboszlai has said that the fate of the Premier League title is in Liverpool's hands, while the Reds don't need to aim to improve their goal difference to boost their chances following the weekend's results.

Liverpool returned to the summit of the Premier League table on Sunday after coming from behind to beat Brighton 2-1 at Anfield. That result was followed by a drab 0-0 draw between the other two title contenders Arsenal and City, which leaves Jurgen Klopp's side two points clear at the top with nine games to go.

While there is still much football to be played over the next two months, Szoboszlai understands that the Reds are in control of their own destiny.

"There are nine games left, we are in first place, which means our fate is in our own hands," Szoboszlai told Hungarian outlet Sportal.

"If we don't make a single mistake from now on, we'll [win the league]. We are progressing from match to match, for now, it is not worth looking any further than Thursday's league game against Sheffield [United]."

No longer making up goal difference

The midfielder also implied that Sunday's result at the Etihad Stadium was an ideal one for Liverpool, as the Reds no longer need to worry about chasing goal difference to catch up on their rivals.

He added: "Every game in the remaining nine rounds must be run as if it were the last – and after Arsenal's point loss on Sunday, we no longer need to aim for sixteen goals in one of the nine games."

While Liverpool are two points clear in first, they only have the second best goal difference of the top three — a metric which could come into play should any of the teams finish the campaign on equal points.

Klopp's men currently have +40, while Arsenal boast +46 and City lag behind with +35.

Taking on bottom club and the league's highest conceders Sheffield United on Thursday, Liverpool have a chance to give a potentially crucial boost to their GD going into the run-in.
