Liverpool defender Calum Scanlon has received unfortunate news on the back of his injury scan. His loan to Millwall is on hold for now.

The Athletic's James Pearce reports that Calum Scanlon will now miss the next three months of the season. It was known that he'd miss some time, with Millwall boss Neil Harris making that clear last week.

“He’s got a stress fracture in his back, which is a recurring injury for him,” he told Southwark News.

“It’s unfortunate. We’re very disappointed to lose him because he was something completely different to what we’ve got in the squad as a very attacking-minded full-back."

That recurring injury has struck badly now and Scanlon will spend the foreseeable future at Kirkby with Liverpool's medical staff. It postpones what has been a very promising season for him so far.

Scanlon moved to Millwall on a season-long loan this summer, with first-team experience viewed as the important next step for him. Championship football would be huge for him - but he'll have to wait to get more of that.

Calum Scanlon's season cut short - for now

The hope will be that Scanlon can recover on schedule here and get back for Millwall. His loan there technically continues - but he'll be away from the club for the next while.

But as Harris says, this is a recurring issue for Scanlon. Harris also said that the initial plan was for a re-scan at six weeks, we'll just have to see if that's still even necessary.

The three-month schedule sounds pretty negative in that regard, suggesting Liverpool and Millwall believe they should take their time with this one. If they can find a 'fix', this should be for the betterment of Scanlon's career, though.

We'll cross our fingers for him. Scanlon is far from the first young football to deal with a recurring injury at a young age. There's still plenty of time to get his season back up and running. Now he just needs all to go well.
