Liverpool have been watching Genoa star Morten Frendrup, Anfield Watch understands.

The Reds famously underwent a midfield overhaul during the summer, saying goodbye to Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, while welcoming in a quartet of new signings: Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch.

Despite the £145m outlay on new midfield talent, Liverpool could still be interested in further strengthening their engine room, particularly with regard to the 'number six' role.

Mac Allister has been Jurgen Klopp's preferred option at the base of the midfield in the Premier League so far this season, though debate continues about his most effective position.

Meanwhile, fellow summer signing Endo is clearly not a long-term solution at 30 years old and, with Thiago yet to play a minute in 2023/24 as he continues his rehab from hip surgery, there could be room for more additions in midfield.

Anfield Watch understands that one such player Liverpool have been paying close attention to is 22-year-old Frendrup.

A former Denmark Under-21 international, Frendrup joined Genoa from Brondby in 2022 and shone as they won promotion back to Serie A last season.

The young midfielder is known as a strong ball winner and presser, while he can fill in at full back as well as in midfield.

In 11 Serie A games this season, Frendrup has an impressive three assists, while no player has made more tackles (47).

There has been no formal enquiry from Liverpool yet. However, Genoa don't expect to keep Frendrup – whose current contract runs until 2026 – in the long term, with admirers lining up.

Elsewhere, Andre Trindade remains another potential midfield target for the Reds, following his impressive display in the Copa Libertadores final.

Anfield Watch reported last month that Liverpool can have priority for his signing in January over other suitors, should they want to do a deal.
