Liverpool defender Rhys Williams completes YET ANOTHER loan move

At one point, he was an indispensable part of the Jurgen Klopp side that sealed Champions League qualification against all odds at the end of the 2020/21 season.

Now, having not played a single first-team game in more than three years, Liverpool centre-back Rhys Williams has completed yet another loan move, this time to League Two side Morecambe.

The 23-year-old, who has been with Liverpool since joining their academy at age 10, becomes the 18th summer signing for Morecambe under manager Derek Adams. He will remain with Shrimps until January.

Sixth loan spell away

Williams, who signed his first professional contract with Liverpool in 2019, is now on his sixth loan away from the club, having spent time with Kidderminster Harriers, Swansea City, Blackpool, Aberdeen and Port Vale.

He made his professional debut for Liverpool in September 2020, playing the full 90 minutes in a 7-2 Carabao Cup victory over Lincoln City. During that season, Williams also made nine Premier League appearances and played in six Champions League fixtures.

Internationally, Williams has represented England at youth level, earning six caps across the U18, U19 and U21 teams.

Since breaking into the Liverpool first team, however, he has only made a total of 52 appearances across his loan spells.

A chance to play football

Williams' latest move to Morecambe, therefore, is seen as an opportunity for regular first-team football, which he believes is crucial for his development.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the loan, Williams said, "I'm delighted, the manager has given me a chance to come and play football here and that's the main thing."

He also highlighted his ambitions for the season, adding, "I want him to be able to trust me, I want to come in and impress the fans so hopefully we have a successful season."

Williams’ decision to join Morecambe was influenced by conversations with Adams and some of his new teammates, which left him confident about the move.

"I spoke to a few of the boys and they were all really complimentary about the club, the staff, and fans, so there was only one place I wanted to go," he said.
