'I can't take my eyes off him!' - Premier League golden boot winner hails Darwin Nunez

Darwin Nunez scored his 10th Premier League goal of the season at the weekend, during Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

The game was heading for a 0-0 draw before Darwin popped up in the 99th minute to give the Reds all three points as they seek to reclaim the Premier League title from Manchester City

Nunez has now scored 14 goals in all competitions this season for Jurgen Klopp’s side, including one in each of his last three league games.

Signed for a fee of up to £85m with add-ons in the summer of 2022 from Benfica, the Uruguay international endured a rocky start to life at Anfield, being red carded early in his Reds career for violent conduct against Crystal Palace

But he settled into life in England quite well and posted 15 goals in 42 matches across all competitions last term.

Rival fans often deride Darwin and he can be seen sometimes as a work in progress but there is no doubt he has been one of Liverpool’s most important campaigners this season, particularly as injuries bite.

Mohamed Salah has been absent for the best part of two months while Diogo Jota is also currently out injured.

Although Darwin has suffered knocks of his own - missing the Carabao Cup final - he has generally been dependable, as he proved again on Saturday.

Sutton can't take his eyes off Nunez

Former Premier League champion and Golden Boot winner Chris Sutton had his say on Nunez during BBC 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, where he hailed the striker for his physicality as well as impact off the bench.

“I can’t take my eyes off him when he plays,” Sutton said. “Liverpool were struggling at the weekend, all of a sudden Nunez came off the bench and I’m not saying that I knew that they were going to win, but you just felt a change in the game.

“His physicality is phenomenal. He is a real nuisance. He is a handful and it’s fair to say people get frustrated with his finishing but some of his finishes this season have been excellent.

“Everyone misses opportunities and he can become cleaner with it but he makes things happen and he makes others around him play better, and that’s the biggest thing.”
