Mateusz Musialowski could finally debut for Liverpool tonight
Mateusz Musialowski could finally debut for Liverpool tonight after years of hype. The 20-year-old is in the Reds' Europa League squad.
Liverpool confirmed on Wednesday evening that Mateusz Musialowski is in their Europa League squad to face Sparta Prague. The Pole is one of two youngsters on the bench yet to have made their debut for the club.
The other, Musialowski's compatriot Fabian Mrozek, is there as a third-choice goalkeeper and very unlikely to feature. Musialowski, on the other hand, has a very good opportunity here.
Liverpool, after all, play Manchester City at the weekend and Jurgen Klopp won't want to risk any senior stars in Prague. It'll likely be a strong starting XI but the plan here will be to wrap things up as quickly as possible and then take off certain players.
Mohamed Salah, for instance, could start here but is highly unlikely to play 90 minutes after his injury. The same can be said about Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Thus Musialowski is a strong candidate to get a game. Jayden Danns hasn't travelled because of a concussion, either, and the Pole could take up that spot in the squad.
Doing so would offer Liverpool fans a true look at a player with plenty of hype over the years.
Mateusz Musialowski at Liverpool
Musialowski joined Liverpool in August 2020 and quickly established himself as one to watch at the academy. One goal against Newcastle Under 18s was absolutely extraordinary, with the playmaker dribbling past five players before firing home.
The goal immediately had fans expecting Musialowski to shoot up the ranks at Liverpool and force his way into Jurgen Klopp's plans. But that was three years ago now and the player hasn't been able to find his way into senior football.
In fact, Liverpool very nearly let Musialowski leave in the summer. Reports in Poland claim a move was set up for Austrian team TSV Hartberg to sign him on a free. The Reds changed their plans at the death, however, asking for a fee and collapsing the deal.
Thus he remains with Liverpool and is now available for a belated senior debut tonight. It could be a moment years in the waiting.
