Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai provides new solution to No.6 problem

Dominik Szoboszlai played in a deeper midfield role in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Arsenal in pre-season and was a standout figure in the role.

With Arne Slot in charge, there were some system changes to be expected going off his time in charge of Feyenoord. The biggest one was the double pivot compared to Jurgen Klopp’s lone defensive midfielder.

In two friendly games in the USA this has already been seen in action. Against Real Betis it was Curtis Jones alongside Wataru Endo who started in those roles.

Jones remained in the starting line-up against Arsenal but Endo dropped down to the bench after a disappointing 45 minutes.

SZOBOSZLAI HAS EXPERIENCE IN DEEPER ROLE

The Hungarian played 72 minutes against Arsenal and he proved that he could be an option as a deeper midfielder.

He won the most tackles and was as accurate as ever with his passes, misplacing only two out of 36. That is arguably the most important thing in midfield under Slot.

Liverpool have been linked with several defensive midfielders this summer with there being a slight concern that Klopp’s signings could not perform the role Slot wants them to.

It may be too early to suggest that this will be Szoboszlai’s new role but he is no stranger to playing there.

He has played in the position for his national side on multiple occasions allowing him to orchestrate things from a deeper position so he can dominate games.

With how many times Liverpool come up against sides who sit in a low block he could certainly be a secret weapon for Slot to use. Liverpool’s second goal against Arsenal is a prime example of why as he gets the pre-assist driving with the ball.

The only concern would be if he has enough defensive nous to be the deepest man but if he has help alongside him as he did with Jones. There could be a genuine future that does not involve an attacking midfield role.

At the back end of last season, he struggled, hence why the 23-year-old was benched in the run-in so this could be a big chance to reinvent himself as Liverpool's main man in the middle of the park.
