Liverpool transfers: New Trent Alexander-Arnold agreement 'months away'
Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold are reported to be ‘months away’ from any potential agreement on a new contract with Real Madrid ready to pounce.
Pete O’Rourke, speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, revealed that there is room for Trent and Liverpool to agree to a new contract for the star right-back, but that this is still a few months away.
There will reportedly be a ‘huge’ pay rise for Alexander-Arnold, and given that he is already on a deal which see him paid £180,000 a week, you would imagine any potential new contract would take him to being one of the highest earners at the club alongside Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

This is despite the fact that he is already the third-highest as things stand, although he is some way short of Van Dijk's reported £240k and Salah's mammoth £350k alleged weekly salary.Of course, it almost goes without saying that should there be any breakdown in negotiations between Liverpool and Trent that Real Madrid will be waiting in the wings, sure to be able to match almost any economic conditions that could be put in place by the Reds.
Arne Slot 'desperate' for Trent to stay
Sources cited by O’Rourke claim that Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is ‘desperate’ not to see Alexander-Arnold leave Anfield on a free transfer next summer, with a long-term view to the 25-year-old becoming permanent captain of the club when Van Dijk is no longer around.
This comes on the back of reports that Slot and Trent will have a discussion about which role and position he is expected to play in after the debacle of him being played in midfield during Euro 2024.
It’s unlikely that Slot has the same plans for him given the high-profile pursuit of a holding midfielder in Martin Zubimendi, but exactly what Slot wants from Alexander-Arnold in terms of team role is still relatively unknown, although he was deployed in his familiar right-back position in Sunday’s friendly victory over Sevilla.
