However, one dampener on the evening came in the 59th minute when Mac Allister was subbed off with an apparent knee injury.

The World Cup winner initially carried on after receiving treatment for a knock in the early stages of the game, but limped off to be replaced by Curtis Jones in the second half.

Speaking after the match, Klopp explained the 'painful' issue Mac Allister was suffering from and relayed his hope that a long absence won't be required.

The manager said: “Macca, it was a shame. Early, he stepped on his knee, there was a cut. As long as the wound was open, we just strapped it, obviously it was painful but he could play.

“Then we stitched it but then obviously it got a bit tighter there and then he couldn’t move anymore. Now we have to see how long that will take. I hope not too long.”

Meanwhile, Klopp also revealed that scans have confirmed that Joel Matip suffered an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament in the draw with Manchester City.

He said: “It’s an ACL, ruptured, so that’s what I unfortunately expected from the first second. Everything looked like that. Very unfortunate.”

The injury likely rules Matip out for the rest of Liverpool's season.

With the 32-year-old in the final year of his Anfield contract, there is a very real chance he has now played his final game for Liverpool.
