Jurgen Klopp jokes about awkward interaction with Alexis Mac Allister
Jurgen Klopp hailed Alexis Mac Allister as a 'wonderful player' after the Argentine's wonder-goal against Sheffield United, while he revealed the details of a very brief chat in Spanish with the midfielder.
Mac Allister came up clutch for the Reds once again at Anfield on Thursday night, scoring a rocket to give his side the lead against the Blades.
Liverpool had taken an early lead through Darwin Nunez's opener, but were pegged back by the league's bottom side against the run of play in the second half after an unfortunate Conor Bradley own goal.
That led to a nervy period before Mac Allister stepped up to power his effort into the top corner on 76 minutes, regaining the lead and helping ensure the Reds finished the night top of the Premier League table.
Cody Gakpo sealed the 3-1 win on 90 minutes with a fine header, but it is Mac Allister's effort that will live longest in the memory of fans.
The goal was he 25-year-old's seventh of the season in all competitions and, remarkably, his seventh goal contribution in his last six outings.
Perhaps appropriately, no Liverpool midfielder has scored or assisted in six successive games since Steven Gerrard in 2013.
'Wonderful player, wonderful boy'
Speaking after the win, Klopp praised Mac Allister as 'super important' before joking about his own limited Spanish.
Klopp said: “We needed Macca’s wonder goal to turn it around It is obvious, he is a super important player for us. After the game he said thank you, I said gracias. Hola as well with my Spanish. Wonderful player, wonderful boy and really happy for Liverpool we got him.”
Opposition manager Chris Wilder was also effusive in his praise for Liverpool's Argentine No. 10.
On the stunning goal, he said: “Unfortunately we came up against a team that score late on and there’s that finish from MacAllister. He’s a World Cup winner and it was a world-class finish."
Not Luck
It's not the first time, Mac Allister has demonstrated his ability to hit long-range strikes this season. After the game, he was asked by TNT which goal was better between his efforts against Fulham and Sheffield United.
“I don’t know… we were discussing that! Both of them were very good,” he replied.
“The most important thing is it helped to win the game and that’s so important. Against Fulham they told me it was lucky, so I had to prove them wrong!”
