Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has been charged by the Football Association due to an incident which took place during last week's Premier League clash between the Reds and Newcastle United at Anfield.
Liverpool secured a 2-1 victory over the Magpies. The match was level at 1-1 heading into second half stoppage time.
However, Fabio Carvalho found the back of the net in the dying moments of the game.
During the match, Achterberg was abusive towards the Newcastle United bench and his actions have landed him in hot water.
As stated by BBC Sport: ‘Liverpool coach John Achterberg and Newcastle’s Daniel Hodges have been charged by the Football Association after an incident during the Reds’ 2-1 win on 31 August.
‘The pair have been charged with improper behaviour. Achterberg, Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach, is also alleged to have used abusive and/or insulting gestures.'
📊 If Mo Salah grabs an assist for Liverpool tonight against Napoli [he is currently on 11], he will become Liverpool's joint top assister in the Champions League, alongside Steven Gerrard and James Milner with 12 assists. #lfc [sky]pic.twitter.com/xjIX4osTlK
Anfield Watch Verdict
The clash between Liverpool and Newcastle United was frustrating. The Magpies were looking to waste time whenever they could.
So, it was a huge relief when Carvalho found the back of the net. It would be fair to assume that Achterberg lost his head as a result of Newcastle United's time-wasting tactics.
Therefore, it is not difficult to see why he eventually ended up saying something to the away bench. Football is an emotional game at the end of the day.
We certainly don't condone Achterberg's actions. But, football can bring out the best and worst of everyone. No one is perfect.
Achterberg has been punished and that should be the end of the topic.
On another note, hopefully Liverpool can kickstart their 2022-23 Champions League campaign (group stages) with a victory against Napoli away from home tonight.
