Joel Matip assesses Liverpool's summer signings

Joel Matip has praised Liverpool's summer recruitment, insisting all four new signings have 'done brilliantly'.

The Reds underwent a midfield overhaul during the transfer window, waving goodbye to Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, before welcoming Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch to Anfield.

'Liverpool 2.0', as the new-look team has been dubbed, has enjoyed a strong start to the 2023/24 season, winning five from eight and sitting just three points off the top of the Premier League table.

Speaking to Liverpool's official matchday programme, Matip heralded the impact of the new arrivals.

The defender said: "All of the new players have settled in well.

"Dom and Macca have played almost the whole time and they have done it brilliantly. You can see that both playing with the ball and also against the ball their adaptation has been great.

"OK, they did that in their old clubs too, but they have never looked like they're really new here.

"Wataru and Ryan came in later but have already shown that they can help us too.

"All the new players have done brilliantly so far and I am really looking forward to seeing them playing."

Matip also insisted that the Reds will be 'going for' all four competitions this season, adding that the team is not yet at the level they want to be, despite a decent start to the campaign.

We have four competitions ahead of us and we want to be as successful as possible in all of them," Matip said.

"We want to go for everything but what it will be at the end, nobody knows. Our focus is just on our next game and working hard to do as well as possible in it.

"Points-wise, our start to the season is not too bad but performances-wise over the 90-plus minutes we've not been completely where we want to be.

"At the end we have often turned it around and it's good to know that we still have the quality to do that. As a defender, though, I hope that we can keep some clean sheets and still win the games."
