Jet-lagged Alexis Mac Allister powered through as Liverpool got 'important' point

Alexis Mac Allister has admitted he was feeling the affects of travelling halfway around the world as Liverpool rescued a point against Manchester City in Saturday's early kick-off.

Mac Allister had been on international duty with Argentina, but due to fixture scheduling, he was among the many South Americans that barely got a rest before being thrown back into action at the Etihad.

The midfielder has admitted that despite the unfortunate timing of the game leaving him a bit groggy, he made sure to put everything he could into his performance.

"Honestly, it is so hard to play like this," he said after the game at the Etihad. "Yesterday [Friday] we were in a meeting talking about Man City and the way we wanted to play, and I couldn't keep my eyes open.

“It’s very tough [with] jet lag, a long trip, but it is what it is. We like playing football and we want to win and that’s why we did our best.

“I think it was a very tough game of course, what we expected.

“They are a very good team but I think it’s a fair result for both teams. They had most of the possession maybe but they didn’t have many chances and I think it’s a fair result.”

Reflecting on the overall team performance, Mac Allister recognised that his side weren't at the races defensively during the first half - but did well to turn the contest around after the break against such a strong team in City.

He added: “In the first half maybe we didn’t defend as well as we can but in the second half we were much better, [with] more challenges, and that was important to get the ball and then score ourselves.

“I think they are really good. You can see their ideas but our passing was very good as well.

“It’s very important [to get a point] because it’s a tough team, tough stadium [to play at].

"But we always say we have to go step by step, game by game, and then at the end we will see what the season brings.”
