Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes that centre-back Virgil van Dijk is the club's most important player.
The Reds signed the Dutchman from Southampton for a transfer fee of £76.19 million back in January 2018. Since then, Van Dijk has not looked back.
The 30-year-old has made 180 appearances for the club's first-team and won six major trophies.
Van Dijk was even named the runner-up for the 2019 Ballon d'Or, which provides an insight into how well he has performed at certain stages during his time at Anfield.
In fact, Redknapp has claimed that the defender is Jurgen Klopp's most valuable player.
As quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter, he told Sky Sports the following: “I wouldn’t give anyone more money than Virgil van Dijk. He should be on the most. They will find another Mohamed Salah but you won’t find another Van Dijk. There will always be another great striker who comes to this club.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
We completely agree with Redknapp that Van Dijk is a key figure at Liverpool. It is no coincidence that the Reds started to win a few trophies after the Dutchman's arrival.
Van Dijk is certainly the best centre-back that we have ever seen at Anfield. He is one of those players that very rarely gets beaten by an opposition forward.
Therefore, it will be a sad day when Van Dijk does move on from the club.
The 30-year-old's contract does not expire until the summer of 2025. With that being the case, the Anfield faithful will be able to sit back and watch Van Dijk represent the club for at least a few more years.
On another note, Liverpool will face Wolverhampton Wanders at Anfield on Sunday to conclude the 2021-22 Premier League campaign.
The Reds can still win the title. But, Liverpool need to secure the three points and hope Aston Villa can get a result against Manchester City.
