Jamie Carragher UNDERWHELMED by Arne Slot to Liverpool talk

Jamie Carragher is underwhelmed by reports coming out that Liverpool will hire Arne Slot as their new manager this summer.

It's now widely reported that Arne Slot will be the next Liverpool manager. Or at least, that's the plan at Anfield - they're negotiating with Feyenoord over a fee.

It comes as something of a surprise, given Slot wasn't really talked about until last week. Liverpool keep things under wraps very well, but even with speculation rampant, few mentioned the Dutchman.

Jamie Carragher believes it's all a sign that Liverpool aren't exactly flush with options in their search.

"What I would say is from Feyenoord to Liverpool is a huge jump," he told Sky Sports. "It is.

"I think it shows at this moment there's probably a dearth of really top managers out there when you look at who Liverpool are going for."

Carragher isn't just talking about Slot, then. Names like Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi will also be on his mind - managers who haven't actually won anything at the absolute highest level.

Liverpool chase Arne Slot

It's a fair point from Carragher. Jurgen Klopp, for instance, arrived as a manager who had twice won the Bundesliga with a club that isn't Bayern Munich. He'd led Borussia Dortmund to a Champions League final, too.

No name linked with Liverpool, seriously linked at least, has won a title at that level. Go back to the last Reds manager who had fantastic success, Rafa Benitez, and he had also won a major European league twice with a 'smaller' team.

The club aren't finding that this time around, it seems. Will it come back to bite them, though, that they haven't been able to tempt a true 'winning' manager - or that they haven't tried to?

Instead, they've prioritised playing style above all. It's a decision that will come to define the near future at Liverpool, for better or worse.
