Reds legend Jamie Carragher has criticised Everton for a social media post taking aim at their former star player.

Following yesterday’s tedious 0-0 draw between Everton and Newcastle at Goodison Park on Saturday evening, the Blues’ social media team poured scorn on Anthony Gordon after he saw his penalty saved on the return to his old club.

Taunted throughout the game by supporters and ex-teammates alike for his perceived links to Liverpool, Gordon endured a difficult afternoon both before and after his crucial first half penalty miss.

Why Jamie Carragher slammed Everton about Anthony Gordon post

It was this penalty miss which was the theme of Everton’s social media post on Sunday, and that to which Carragher reacted, as can be seen below:

Carragher makes a few salient points here, specifically the fact that Gordon was a central figure to Everton’s survival in the Premier League prior to his sale to Newcastle, again netting very important profit for the club during a time when the Blues were haemorrhaging money.

However, there is also an argument that this is simply a case of how clubs and supporters feel about supposed ‘betrayal’ by once-beloved players, there will always be a level of needle. Luis Figo once had a pig’s head thrown at him, perhaps a sightly disrespectful social media post is the equivalent in 2024.

In any case, Gordon did little to excite Reds fans watching on, as the England winger and reported summer £75m transfer target for Liverpool failed to hit the target with most of his shots playing in a slightly unfamiliar centre forward position.

Speculation over Gordon’s future was somewhat quelled after he reportedly agreed a new contract last month. Having scored a penalty against Manchester City last week, Gordon might yet have given the club he was close to joining a reason to celebrate come the end of May.
