"It would have to be some pitch" - Paul Robinson on Joe Gomez being linked with Villa

Pundit Paul Robinson has given his opinion on whether Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez should join Aston Villa.

The England international has been linked with a move to Villa Park in recent times due to a lack of game time at Anfield.

Gomez has only made 20 appearances for Liverpool's first-team this season.

Robinson said that playing regular senior football at Aston Villa would be a great opportunity for Gomez.

However, the former England No.1 further added that the 24-year-old might find it difficult to leave Liverpool.

“Given his age and where he is at in his career, he will want to be playing every week. To get that under Steven Gerrard at a club like Aston Villa is a great opportunity for any player,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“But when you look at where Liverpool are, do you want to go to Villa? They’re in the bottom half of the table.

“The attraction will be regular first-team football. But if Gomez is playing 25 games a season for Liverpool it would have to be some pitch from Gerrard.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Gomez was an integral part of the Liverpool side that won the 2019-20 Premier League title. The defender averaged a WhoScored player rating of 6.78 across the aforementioned campaign (28 appearances).

But, Gomez suffered a serious knee injury during the 2020-21 season, which is a key reason why he has lost his place in the side to Joel Matip.

However, we would advise the Englishman to stay at Liverpool. The reality is, Matip is 30 years of age. He will not be a Liverpool player forever.

With that being the case, we do hope that Gomez sticks tight. He will get his chance eventually. Gomez simply needs to stay patient.
