“It hurts but you have to respect Liverpool" - Dimitar Berbatov on the Reds' form

Former Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov has given his thoughts on Liverpool's current form.

The Reds are having a superb season. Liverpool have already secured the League Cup and are also in contention to claim the Premier League title, Champions League and FA Cup.

Berbatov has admitted that watching the Reds become a top side has hurt him.

As quoted by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, the 41-year-old told Betfair the following: “It hurts but you have to respect Liverpool. It was hard to watch (Manchester) United’s 4-0 defeat (to Liverpool at Anfield last week). There was a massive difference on the pitch between the two sides. Everyone connected to United is watching Liverpool with envy right now. “But at the same time when you watch them you have to respect them for the way they play - they are playing good football and they show it on the pitch. “There is a big difference now between Liverpool and United. Liverpool are targeting a quadruple, United are aiming to scrape into Europe. They have a chance to make history, it’s going to be difficult but not impossible to do it. “I don’t like supporting (Manchester) City but I don’t want to see Liverpool winning four trophies for f**k sake. Seeing how they have progressed and how United have regressed makes my heart bleed.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

The times have certainly changed. It was not that long ago that Manchester United were dominating England and Europe.

Now, it is Liverpool challenging for the major honours in club football. The Anfield faithful definitely deserve to see a bit of success in the modern era.

Before 2020, the Reds had not won a league title since 1990. So, it is good to see the supporters finally getting some reward for all the years of heartache.

We would advise all Reds to not take these times for granted. Success does not last forever.
