"I’m surprised" - Pundit on Joe Gomez signing a new contract with Liverpool

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has admitted that he was surprised to see Joe Gomez sign a new deal with Liverpool.

Even though the majority of Liverpool fans are happy Gomez signed a new contract, there have been a few people confused as to why the centre-back has extended his stay at Anfied due to his current role in Jurgen Klopp's squad.

“From his point of view, I’m surprised to see him sign," Robinson told Football Insider.

“I’m surprised he didn’t want to leave and become that main centre-half just like (Virgil) van Dijk is at Liverpool.

“But on the other hand, he’s obviously been assured of game time and was happy with the role that was proposed.

“Within these five years there are still options to go out on loan and options to leave.

“It just gives the club that security with their asset and gives Liverpool four top-class centre-backs to lean on for this season.

“The situation could well change again next summer if he’s not playing as much as he wanted.

“The onus is now on him to show what he’s got now if he wants to get back into the England squad and become the partner for Van Dijk.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

I wouldn't say I was surprised to see Gomez sign a new contract, but I would be shocked if he stays at Liverpool after next season.

After what happened a few years ago (injuries), Klopp will never want to have a centre-back shortage again and tying Gomez down to a new deal helps prevent that.

However, unless Ibrahima Konate or Joel Matip pick up a serious injury next season, I can't see the England international getting much game time in the Premier League or Champions League. He was behind the aforementioned names in the pecking order last season.

Especially with the signing of Calvin Ramsay, it means that Gomez won't be Trent Alexander-Arnold's back up and right-back anymore.

Who knows, maybe the 25-year-old is happy with the role the Reds have offered him.
