"I'm really looking forward to being back" - Xabi Alonso on Anfield return

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has revealed that he is excited about returning to Anfield later this month.

Liverpool Legends will face Manchester United Legends on the 24th of September. Alonso has been selected to represent the Reds.

The Spaniard has given his thoughts ahead of the game.

"I'm really looking forward to being back in the stadium, to be back with the fans and it's always very enjoyable and you feel really privileged to have played there," he told the club's official website, as quoted by AW on Twitter.

"Every time you have the opportunity to get back to Anfield, it's really exciting and for me after a few years since my last participation.

"You always miss where you have been happy and where you have had great moments, great memories. You always miss it – for sure after some time. It's going to be really enjoyable, really exciting for me to have that feeling.

"I remember the first time I was on the pitch and you felt the soul of the stadium. That's what excites me the most – to get back and to feel that special charm that is unique at Anfield."

Anfield Watch Verdict

It will be brilliant to see Alonso wearing the famous red once again. The midfielder was a serious player for Liverpool.

Between 2004-09, Alonso scored 18 goals and registered 20 assists in 210 appearances for the club's first-team. The 40-year-old had the ability to complete passes that other players could not.

Alonso also helped the club win the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

So, he is very much a legend of the club. We can't wait to see Alonso back in action. On another note, Liverpool's first-team will face Ajax at Anfield tonight.

The Champions League group stage game will kick-off at 8:00pm UK time.
