"I’d chance my arm" - Stan Collymore urges Liverpool to re-sign Gini Wijnaldum

Former Red Stan Collymore would like to see Liverpool re-sign midfielder Gini Wijnaldum.

The Dutchman departed Anfield and signed for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer last summer.

Wijnaldum has struggled since joining the Ligue 1 club. The 31-year-old has only scored three goals and registered two assists in 29 appearances for PSG this season.

Wijnaldum has also been averaging a WhoScored player rating of 6.55 across the 2021-22 campaign.

With that being the case, Collymore has urged Liverpool to re-sign the midfielder.

The 51-year-old told the Mirror the following: “Wijnaldum is having a proper wobbler at Paris Saint-Germain and, despite the fact he’s earning a king’s ransom, if I were Jurgen Klopp I’d chance my arm with a cheeky low-ball offer to try to get him back to Liverpool.

“He’s 32 in November, the same age as Jordan Henderson and four years younger than James Milner, and he’d be a great player for the youngsters at Anfield such as Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones to learn from, too.

“I’m not usually a fan of going back but if there’s a cheap deal to be done, my old club could still be getting a proper, top-level performer.

“If Liverpool are serious then having Milner, Henderson and Wijnaldum around that midfield for another 12 or 24 months could not only help Jones and Elliott but it would also crucially get an extra body into the area as well.

“He knows the way they play, he knows the manager well, he knows the dressing-room well, and if PSG would say, ‘Look, we’ll get him off the wage bill for free or even £5million or £8m’, you’d take him.

“He’s generally a good pro, he doesn’t create problems.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Wijnaldum was a fine servant for Liverpool. Between 2016-21, the midfielder made 237 appearances for the club's first-team.

But, the reality is, Wijnaldum and Liverpool parted ways. He is also at the backend of his career. As we have already pointed out, Wijnaldum is 31 years of age.

Also, Liverpool are not short of options in midfield (Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jones, Elliott and Milner).

Therefore, we don't see the club re-signing the Dutchman.
