“I worry for them in midfield" - Paul Merson on Liverpool

Pundit Paul Merson does have concerns regarding Liverpool's midfield.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp possesses plenty of options in the middle of the park. Despite that being the case, Merson is worried about Liverpool's midfield.

“I worry for them in midfield,” he told the Daily Star, as quoted by Rousing The Kop.

“They are very reliant on Fabinho.

“Beyond him you’ve got Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Thiago really. I think they are just getting by there with that group, and that’s not really good enough for a club like Liverpool.

“Because the full-backs are creating and the forwards are scoring, you don’t notice it so much but it’s not like it used to be. Liverpool’s midfield used to be the key to it all. It was a well-oiled machine that had everything and allowed the rest of the team to function.

“But Henderson is getting on now. Thiago for me is very inconsistent. Milner has been a warrior for them but is 36. And they’ve never been able to rely on Naby Keita.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Merson does make a fair point. Klopp does possess an ageing midfield. But, for the time being, we are confident that the aforementioned names will be able to perform for the Reds next season.

Don't forget, Liverpool challenged for the quadruple last campaign. Without the likes of Henderson, Milner and Keita, the Reds would not have been able to compete on all fronts.

We are backing the midfielders to go again next season. Hopefully the players have enjoyed their time off and are ready to hit the ground running.

If the Liverpool players apply themselves, they could definitely win more silverware this season. Only time will tell if that is to be the case.
