“I think he’d be a great squad player for them" - Paul Merson on reported Reds target

Former Arsenal player Paul Merson believes that Liverpool should make a move for West Ham United winger Jarrod Bowen.

The Reds have been linked with a move for the England international in recent times. With that being the case, Merson has been discussing what Bowen could bring to Liverpool.

The 54-year-old came to the conclusion that the winger would be a "great squad player" for the Reds.

“He reminds me of a forward version of James Milner – reliable, honest and works his socks off for the team. He’s been linked with a move to Liverpool,” Merson wrote in his column for SportsKeeda.

“I think he’d be a great squad player for them. He won’t go in there and take someone’s spot immediately, but Liverpool play a lot of games and their brand of football is intense, so he’ll have plenty of game time under his belt.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Bowen is coming off a terrific season. He scored 18 goals and registered 13 assists in 51 appearances for West Ham United.

Bowen also averaged a WhoScored player rating of 7.07 across the 2021-22 campaign. There is no denying that the 25-year-old would add some quality to Liverpool's squad.

However, we would be surprised if Bowen would be willing to be a squad player at Anfield. He is in the prime of his career after all.

But, as Merson pointed out, Liverpool play in plenty of tournaments (Premier League, Champions League, League Cup and FA Cup).

Therefore, Bowen would certainly get an opportunity at Anfield. Only time will tell if Liverpool and the forward are to cross paths.

Bowen is contracted until the conclusion of the 2024-25 campaign, so West Ham United can demand a reasonable transfer fee for the Englishman.
