Former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has opened up on his time at Anfield.

The Reds signed the Dutchman from Newcastle United for a transfer fee of £24.75 million back in the summer of 2016.

Wijnaldum was a terrific player for Liverpool. He scored 22 goals and registered 16 assists in 237 appearances for the club's first-team.

But, Wijnaldum left Liverpool and signed for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in the summer of 2021.

However, the move has not worked out for the 31-year-old, which is why he has joined Roma on loan for the 2022-23 campaign.

Wijnaldum has recently implied that he regrets leaving Liverpool.

He told Football Daily the following: “It’s always difficult to say what is the perfect midfielder but I think at Liverpool, my style fit good… maybe for Liverpool I was but I can understand for other teams it will be difficult.

“If a manager like (Jurgen) Klopp says that you are the perfect midfielder of course you will be really happy that he’s said that."

Anfield Watch Verdict

Wijnaldum was the "perfect midfielder" for Klopp's Liverpool team. There is a reason why he made so many appearances for the club's first XI.

But, Wijnaldum wanted a new challenge and decided to leave the club. Liverpool have certainly not struggled without the Dutchman.

The Reds competed for the quadruple last season. But, we do miss watching Wijnaldum represent the club.

He always gave his absolute all. But, players leave football clubs all the time. Therefore, it never comes as a surprise when a footballer departs Anfield.
